the departed
this movie begs the eternal question: why re-make a perfectly awesome movie simply so that white guys can act it out in english? infernal affairs is a fantastic 2002 Chinese action thriller. the departed is the same movie, with famous Hollywood actors. there were some slight changes, which I mostly saw as weaknesses, not improvements. the biggest change was in the ending, which of course I won't give away, but disappointed me with its non-sensicalness - the American touch. I would hate to see Scorcese win an Oscar just for stealing a movie. The cast was decent, with the exception of Vera Farmiga, who was much better in Running Scared. Jack Nicholson was entertaining but a little over the top, and the whole FBI complication was unecessary. feel free to argue with me.

i haven't seen it, but i wonder the same thing about the remakes. it's totally silly. i just rewatched infernal affairs here in HK a few days ago and loved it just as much the 2nd time around. i heard that scorcese denies that it's a remake. ???
as far as big stars go, andy lau is as big as you can get here in HK. you can't go a block without seeing his face plastered on some ad. I for one don't mind that so much. :-)
We saw it. I liked it and thought Scorsese did a good job. Agree about the ending (BTW do you mean the very ending scene, which I thought was really dumb or the last major plot event?) Unfortunately he apparently doesn't own up to the fact that it's a remake, just saying it's "based on" IA. Lame.
I agree that Jack N. was way too over the top. Best job was by DiCaprio.
moviequyn! how are you? firm life is treating me well. are you loving puerto rico? shoot me an e-mail sometime, i'm still at the old berkeley address.
just saw it on DVD last night. i was disappointed, felt like it was disjointed and didn't flow well. agree with you on the ending and the FBI thing.
i like the original better. but yes, leo was by far the best.
